Arabian Nights of the 80's

The world's celebration of David Bowie with exhibitions and dedicated events clearly influenced the latest Balmain collection, bringing back the big shoulders and square shaped jacket. The shape of the trousers is baggy at the top, recalling Bowie's provocational outfits and made in luxurious fabric as only Balmain can do. The inspiration Rousteing drew from the Bowie world is perfectly balanced with the baroque mood that always prevails in his collections, with an hint of oriental flair that is celebrated by the the turban skirts, either long or short, and by the bold choice of bright colours.
The embroidery is rich, following the same geometrical pattern on every garment to enlight the fine work of the craftsmen.
The creative process that is prior to the final results on the catwalk is long and intensive.
It starts from the inspiration, the ideas of the designer, usually expressed in sketches, to have a first impression of the collection. There has to be a common concept, that is usually represented with the return of the same trousers or skirt shape. Once the idea of the collection is clear, some Étoiles are made: samples in raw fabric, to adjust the shapes, where the designer almost transforms into an architect of the fabric. When the prototype is defined, the final expensive and embroided fabric is used to create the garments, fitted on the model's body and styled. From the hair and make up to the smallest accessory, the final outcome is what we see on the catwalk, in a very real sense: a dream come true.
